CPJ’s publications range from books to position papers to newsletters. the Catalyst, our quarterly newsletter, goes in-depth on a wide range of public justice issues. Our monthly e-newsletter, Ola!, informs about our current work and what is going on in other justice organizations across the country.

Our publications also include well-researched and thoughtful background and position papers on various public justice issues. From housing and homelessness to electoral reform, we explore current policy contexts and propose just alternatives.

Catalyst

These are just a few of the public justice issues reported on in CPJ’s newsletter, published three times a year, the Catalyst. Chandra is reading... Empire of Illusion

My mother-in-law passed me Empire of Illusion by Chris Hedges, saying “You just have to read this one.” The next day, before I had even had the chance to crack the covers, Bob Goudzwaard referenced the book twice in his AGM speech, calling it “a most excellent little book.” With two such ringing endorsements, I could hardly put off reading the book. And having done so, I would echo Bob Goudzwaard: it is indeed a most excellent book.

Empire of Illusion is a stinging indictment of our celebrity-obsessed, narcissistic culture that has lost sight of how the values we preach have been perverted and replaced with consumerism, corporatism and militarism. Hedges laments the state of democracy, the power of corporations and the wealthy, the growing class divide, the unwillingness or inability of our elites to stop the slide, and the illiteracy and obsession with illusion over reality that prevent most of us from identifying the problems. Taxes and the Common Good

Taxes raise the revenues used to pay for democratic institutions and to provide government programs and services. Taxes can also be used to promote other economic and social policy goals through the use of tax expenditures.

Over the past decade, significant changes have been made to Canada’s tax system, including deep cuts to tax rates. The impact of these changes is a cause for concern. In this background research paper, policy analyst Chandra Pasma explores the changes and their impact, as well as policy options currently being advocated for to change Canada’s tax mix. Read more »
