If you asked the average Canadian if they would rather reduce child poverty or have a new soccer field in their home town, what would they say? I would like to think that most would choose the former. However, this is not the choice politicians seem to think we would make. Read more »
Canadians are just beginning to prepare themselves for the season of Christmas. For Christians it is the moment when God took human form and renewed the hope of salvation for the world. Believers recount this story of an infant deity born into poverty so bleak that his first hours were spent in a barn “because there was no room for them in the inn.”
One month before Christmas 2009, Canadians were informed that almost one in every ten kids still lives in poverty in this, one of the richest countries on the face of the earth. On November 24th 1989 the Parliament of Canada unanimously voted to end child poverty by the year 2000. Today, after twenty years, this promise remains broken. Read more »
It can be easy to get discouraged. We’re being governed by a precarious minority parliament, the economy is still in the tank, and despite a 20-year-old commitment to change, almost one child out of every 10 still lives in poverty in Canada today. All that, and the short, dark days of winter are upon us.

The gap between the rich and poor is a growing problem in Canada. It affects the general well-being of Canadians and especially that of more vulnerable groups in our society, including children.
Ed Broadbent, former leader of the NDP (1975-1989) and long time MP (over 20 years) is challenging Canadians to work towards narrowing this gap. While involved in politics, Broadbent constantly advocated for causes such as this in the House of Commons, gaining much admiration from supporters across the political spectrum.
Since his resignation a few years ago he has continued to speak out about issues of poverty and social justice. Speaking at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton on October 19, Broadbent outlined some of his proposals for narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor. Read more »

CPJ has joined other Campaign 2000 partners to raise awareness about the need for jobs that pay living wages and to pursue strategies to get there. The project, Addressing the Falling Fortunes of Young Children and Families in Canada, is underway in four communities across Canada: Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto and St. John’s (Newfoundland) and is funded by Human Resources and Social Development Canada.
