Faith’s Role in Addressing Climate Change

Globe/burning candleThis week, a two-day event was held in Ottawa, where, for the first time, faith leaders met to address the growing crises caused by climate change. Leaders from faith, political and environmental communities discussed the recently created Canadian Interfaith Call for Leadership and Action on Climate Change. This event was organized by a collaborative interfaith committee on climate justice, including Citizens for Public Justice, The Commission of Justice and Peace of the Canadian Council of Churches, Faith and the Common Good, The Hill Times and Embassy Magazine. Korten comes to Canada: The Great Turning

This well-known author and engaging public speaker regaled his audiences with the need to undertake a “Great Turning” in our cultural, political and economic behaviours. Less than fair? Canada's commitment to climate change

Global warmingCanadians wondering about the federal government’s latest policy moves on climate change can’t really be faulted for missing the news. Environment Minister Jim Prentice released details of Canada’s commitment to provide climate change financing in support of the Copenhagen Accord in a Friday evening speech last October 1st. However, the government's promises create more questions than answers and raise concerns that the money promised will be less than it seems. Read more »

The G8 - G20 in Canada: A Time for Inspired Leadership and Action

Among the flurry of advocacy and education on global issues, this year there is a new coalition of faith communities organizing to make a difference. For the first time in Canada, national organizations of Christian, Baha’i, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, Buddhist, and First Nations faith communities are working together at a Religious Leaders' Summit to mobilize Canadians to address poverty, care for Creation, and invest in peace. An opportunity for fresh action on human rights

Human Rights DayHuman rights are often defined in terms of political and civil liberties. However, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, signed 61 years ago this December, also includes economic and social rights. As the world attempts to recover from the impacts of a global economic crisis, the need for protection of such rights is greater than ever. Such need has prompted individuals and organizations in Canada and abroad to pressure governments to get involved, creating opportunities for fresh action in the promotion of human rights.
