"Treating people the same won't create equality..."

Hearing this statement at End Exclusion 2010 on November 2 caused me to sit up and pay attention. Its content is quite counter-intuitive. What is so wrong with treating everyone the same? Isn’t that what equality is? However, when you apply this question to society there are multiple points where it is clear the hard and fast rule of treating everyone the same has not, in fact, created equality. Read more »

The Great Turning: A choice for a brighter future

The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth CommunityEvery day we are faced by choices, both trivial and important. However, in our present times it seems increasingly true that we must be aware that nearly every choice we make is an important one. If you want to be healthy, try not being poor

Since Chandra has already described how they went, I thought this might be a good chance for me to reflect on my own experience of the workshops as an intern and what I took away from them. The 2009 Federal Budget is being released on January 27 – but a strategy to address poverty in Canada is not likely to be a major element. What can we, as citizens, do?

Join CPJ at one of our pre-budget workshops in Kitchener-Waterloo, Toronto and Whitby to explore how to address poverty in Canada. Read more »

CPJ calls citizens to envision Canada without poverty

May was an exciting month for CPJ as we travelled across Canada engaging people in a dialogue about poverty in Canada and suggesting ways to fight against poverty. In coordination with the recent launch of our Envisioning Canada Without Poverty (www.canadawithoutpoverty.ca) campaign, CPJ held workshops in five different cities, Ottawa, Halifax, London, Winnipeg and Edmonton, to explore a national poverty reduction strategy and empower citizens to engage in advocacy. Advocacy is an ongoing process; change does not come in a day. We must keep persisting because we have a duty to work toward a just society in which all people can live in dignity and have access to basic needs. Read more »
