A new chapter: Starting with CPJ

First, for all of our regular blog readers, let me introduce myself. My name is Rebekah Sears (please feel free to call me Bekah) and I am CPJ’s new policy intern. I am originally from New Brunswick, and have been living in Ottawa for the past two years while completing my MA in International Affairs from Carleton University.

For many years I have been passionate about mobilizing governments, communities, and individuals to become involved with social justice and the promotion of human dignity within the public sphere. These passions for dignity and justice are based on the Biblical foundation that all people are made in the image of God. In addition, I view publically promoting human rights and holding the government accountable as privileges and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship.

I am also a political junkie, obsessed with following every development in the public sphere – partly the product of being the daughter of a social studies teacher in a family where daily political analysis is inescapable. So CPJ is a great place for me to be!

As I settle into this new chapter in my life, I’m feeling a range of emotions, from being to overwhelmed to nervous to excited – sometimes hitting all of the above (and more!) within five minute intervals. Mastering the inner workings of any organization is overwhelming, from learning the content and history of various issues to the position of the organization on these issues. Also, because this is my first job out of the confines of school, it creates some feelings of nervousness.

Despite my worries, I feel very excited and privileged to work for CPJ for this next year. My responsibilities range from tracking legislation, to meeting with politicians, NGOs and the public, to writing both informally and formally on the issues of public justice in Canada. I have been involved with these kinds of activities throughout my time in school, as well as my free time, and now they are part of my job!

It is a wonderful thing when work responsibilities line up with personal interests and passions. I’m looking forward to delving into the issues and connecting with you through these posts. I hope you enjoy them, and please don’t hesitate to comment or leave any suggestions!
