De Souza supports guaranteed livable income

Last week, with excellent timing, the National Post published a column by Father Raymond de Souza calling for a Negative Income Tax version of guaranteed livable income on the very day Jim Mulvale, Mike McCracken and I were leading our workshop on GLI at the Canadian Social Forum.

De Souza advocates for Hugh Segal's vision of an NIT set above the poverty line, noting that while he doesn't agree with Senator Segal on the causes of poverty, he nonetheless believes that an NIT is a good way of solving, rather than alleviating poverty.

"A NIT which put money in the hands of the poor immediately would likely be more stimulative than building a bridge a year from now. So it might be good policy for this crisis. Or it might simply be good policy whose time has finally come."
