CPJ events this weekend (Oct 17-20)
CPJ will be across the country this weekend. I’m heading down to Southern Ontario tomorrow for two days in the Hamilton and Ancaster area. Friday, I’ll be participating in a Stand Up event on poverty at Redeemer University College at 11 am, and speaking afterwards about advocacy and citizen engagement now that the election is over.
On Saturday, I’ll be at the Day of Encouragement hosted by Diaconal Ministries Canada at Hamilton District Christian High School. I’ll be leading a workshop on Envisioning Canada Without Poverty. The day runs from 9-4, and my workshop will be from 10:15-12:00.
Meanwhile in Ottawa, Karri will be participating in an event to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty at noon at the Dorothy O’Connell anti-poverty monument by City Hall. This gathering is organized by CPJ, the National Anti-Poverty Organization and the Ottawa District Labour Council, and it will also be a Stand Up event.
Over in BC, former CPJ intern Trixie Ling will be leading a workshop in Vancouver Saturday on charity, justice and affordable housing, looking particularly at the role of churches in advocacy. This workshop is part of the Church and Affordable Housing Conference taking place at Broadway Church on Friday and Saturday. Information on registration is available from Shalom Seekers.
After this busy weekend, Joe will be in Edmonton on Monday night, sharing the floor with John Hiemstra at The Kings University College. Joe will speak about ecology and justice from a Christian perspective, and John Hiemstra, a political science professor at Kings, will share his recent research on the oil sands from a public justice perspective. The event will take place at 7:30 pm.
